Color & Finish

How to choose the right paint sheen.

The finish affects more than shine. It changes how a room looks, cleans and wears over time.

The best sheen is the one that fits the room, the surface and the way your family actually lives.

Flat and matte

These finishes soften light and help disguise minor wall imperfections. They work beautifully in low-traffic bedrooms, ceilings and formal spaces, but they are generally less washable.

Eggshell

Eggshell offers a subtle glow and is a common choice for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. It balances a refined appearance with practical cleanability.

Satin

Satin is more durable and washable, making it a strong choice for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and children’s spaces.

Semi-gloss

Semi-gloss is typically reserved for trim, doors, cabinetry and other surfaces that need greater durability and easy cleaning.

The Yonder rule: higher sheen reveals more surface imperfections, so preparation matters even more as gloss increases.
